Most viewed Melbourne related articles[edit]

I recently came across the Wikipedia article traffic statistics website when reading the Wikipedia:Australian_Wikipedians'_notice_board. I thought it may be of interest to Melburnian Wikipedians as to what are the most viewed Melbourne related Wikipedia articles. The following is a sample of Melbourne articles in various categories and the number of times they were viewed in the month of May, 2008. It looks like Kylie is top of the list, or have I missed someone.

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme[edit]

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Victoria geography stub discussion at WP:WSS/P[edit]

Hi all - this is just to let you know there's a discussion going on at the stub-sorting project about how best to split up Category:Victoria geography stubs into subcategories. To cut a long story short, that category is getting over-full, so regional subcategories are being considered, probably each with individual templates for different counties or districts). The main problem is how to break the state into regions. Please feel free to make any comments/recommendations at WP:WSS/P. Cheers.

As an unrelated aside, BTW, is there any reason this project ins't listed in Category:Australia-related WikiProjects?

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Melbourne[edit]

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 23:13, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Most popular Start and Stub class articles[edit]

Over the last couple of months I have done an assessment of the importance of all the Melbourne related articles. In making those assessments I collected "page view" data using, a site operated by Henrik. For the benefit of any editors who may be looking for a Melbourne related article as a future project I publish the following top 50 most viewed Start and Stub class articles. The monthly page views are for June 2008. I have not included biographies of People from Melbourne in the lists.

Hey Cuddy, that's totally awesome. You surely didn't calculate that by hand did you? --pfctdayelise (talk) 07:24, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Not sure what you mean by "by hand", Brianna. I did look up each individual article and put the "page views" in a spreadsheet which I then sorted to get the above lists. A new list of the Melbourne articles, which can be downloaded into a spreadsheet, is now available here. - Cuddy Wifter (talk) 02:02, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Meetup for November Wiki Wednesday (post-Melb Cup)[edit]

Hi all, I was bold and decided we should have a meet-up on November 5th. See Wikipedia:Meetup/Melbourne 11. I'm going to give a talk at LUV and thought hey, it's a Wiki Wednesday... and meet-up time is well overdue! Please swing by Melb Uni if you can and hang out. --pfctdayelise (talk) 07:23, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Melbourne GA[edit]

Although it is a bit late now, our flagship article, Melbourne is currently undergoing a good article review. Most of it seems to be down pat but any help would be appreciated. MvjsTalking 06:59, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

LGA - best Melbourne article?[edit]

I note that a number of the council articles are regarded as stubs, but it isn't clear if there is a "best practice/example" article to draw from. Are there any featured article LGA articles for cities anywhere in the world? What's the best city example in Melbourne that I should look at if I want to improve an LGA article? (eg. City of Monash)? Thanks! Natebailey (talk) 22:44, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

We don't have any Featured or GA rated LGA articles for Melbourne. The best we have are B class articles for City of Glen Eira and City of Stonnington. You might also want to check the following Melbourne suburbs which are also B class - Dandenong, Footscray. Frankston, Frankston North, Somers, St Kilda, Warrandyte and Williamstown. For Featured Articles from around the world see Geography and places. Hope this helps. - Cuddy Wifter (talk) 04:56, 29 November 2008 (UTC)
There hasn't been a featured LGA article to my knowledge, but I'm happy to review and give some pointers about how they might be expanded along the way.
If it's City of Monash you're after improving, some suggestions if you don't mind:
a) I'd merge History of City of Monash into the article. It's not very long, a lot of it doesn't have much to do with the LGA (remember that it's an article about the council, not about the general area - some context will be necessary but not most of the history article), and the history section in the main article would need to be a lot longer to make FA status.
b) There's a few more things that could be included. Structure? Politics (partisan? right-leaning? left-leaning? major issues?)? Past mayors? Geography might warrant a section too. Just some suggestions anyway. Rebecca (talk) 07:43, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks all, good feedback and suggestions! :-) Natebailey (talk) 22:22, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Melbourne International Comedy Festival[edit]

Hello! I'm currently working on rewriting, expanding and referencing the Melbourne International Comedy Festival article and have just requested a peer review in the hopes of getting some more ideas on how to improve it. I would love to get some input, so please come by if you're interested - it'd be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Shoemoney2night (talk) 10:05, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Milestone Announcements[edit]

  • All WikiProjects are invited to have their "milestone-reached" announcements automatically placed onto Wikipedia's announcements page.
  • Milestones could include the number of FAs, GAs or articles covered by the project.
  • No work need be done by the project themselves; they just need to provide some details when they sign up. A bot will do all of the hard work.

I thought this WikiProject might be interested. Ping me with any specific queries or leave them on the page linked to above. Thanks! - Jarry1250 (t, c) 22:05, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group[edit]

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 05:58, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Spirit of Mystery due to arrive in Australia soon[edit]

The replica ship Spirit of Mystery is less than 1,000 nautical miles (1,900 km) from the end of her journey to Australia. Are there any members in Melbourne who would be able to get some photographs of her arrival there? The only photo on Geograph is too distant a view to be useable. Mjroots (talk) 17:58, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

I see from reading the ships blog that a crew member suffered a broken leg yesterday. Anyone on Port Phillip, with access to a boat and a camera, or have a friend with a boat can check the ships Current position. Cuddy Wifter (talk) 05:41, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Spirit of Mystery arrived at Melbourne on 9 March. Mjroots (talk) 13:53, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

Article alerts[edit]

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Thanks. — Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 09:24, 15 March, 2009 (UTC)

Template:Metlink Display[edit]

I noticed this template and its related templates Template:Metlink Timetable, Template:Metlink Origin, Template:Metlink Destination, Template:Metlink Via, Template:Metlink Type, Template:Metlink Op Hours and Template:Metlink Operator recently after checking an edit on the Grenda article. It raises two concerns of mine:

  1. Is it really necessary to have details on all of Melbourne's 300+ bus routes in an encyclopedia? They are subject to change and IMO is something that can be better handled by the Metlink website as an external link. Most of the data for route lists in Wikipedia would have to be sourced from Metlink anyway. I recall that this wasn't always the case but now there are articles on suburbs and railway stations which contain lists of bus routes serving that location - I'm not yet convinced as to why it would be necessary to have this information in an encyclopedia when the information would always be inferior to what is available on the official public transport information site. Simply put, it would be informative enough in a suburb article to say "Suburb A is served by several bus routes, connecting it to B, C and D" as opposed to "Suburb A is served by route 123 - B to C via D, E and F and route 234 - G to H via I, J and K".
  2. Regardless of whether said information should be included, the templates are hard to maintain, especially for someone who doesn't understand Wiki markup. The boxes are essentially a combination of nested switch statements and it is difficult to find out where to make an edit to fix a typo (e.g. Nunawading is spelt as Nudawading). There are also acronyms in use which may not be obvious to all readers - RS (railway station) and SC (shopping centre) are used frequently in the templates without any explanation to what they stand for.

I'm okay with the List of Melbourne bus routes article, but it appears that as of late, the information in that article is being duplicated in various other articles and creating a general maintenance nightmare, regardless of whether the templates are used. Bus routes by their very nature are liable to be replaced or changed and this seems to be creating an unnecessary workload.

Anyway, I'm just interested in what others think of this. Sorry about the length of this post, and feel free to shoot down any or all of my ideas if they seem ridiculous to you. :) invincible (talk) 06:11, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

I agree with this poster, and I have begun deleting the templates from all articles, prior to nominating it for deletion. without the direct external link to the route schedule, I can see the list in this way for the bus company articles, but this does not require a template linking to3-4 other templates with switches, each switch containing 375 labels!
Wikipedia is not a directory, nor is it a tourist guide. Every Melbourne locality article does not require a list of all buses that operate, their bus company, their destinations and points of origin, their type of route, and an external link to the bus company route schedule. Also, when the routes change, the links change, and this leaves broken external links in the articles, because the template is not being maintained. And, changing external links in a template defeats the purpose of a template. I will finish deleting from articles in a couple of days and propose the template for deletion. The bus company articles are last on my list, and I think that someone could change the text in those articles to static, to provide for a quick deletion of the template. --Kleopatra (talk) 17:32, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Regarding the templates, the aspects that appear unsatisfactory to me are the embedded external links, difficulty for editing, taking up too much space (a lot of white space on the right), rigidity in format discouraging integration with prose, and the distracting orange boxes. Having said that, I do believe that a detailed discussion of public tranport serivices, including buses, should be included in suburb articles but in standard paragraph format with inline citations to reliable sources.Melburnian (talk) 01:47, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Help required with Category:People from Melbourne[edit]

The above category was becoming unwieldy with over 1000 articles listed and probably another 1000 which could be listed in this category. I have therefore tagged the category with "catdiffuse" and suggest that all articles be moved into a suitable subcategory and that Category:People from Melbourne would have very few actual articles linked, but rather be a list of the subcategories. I have made a start on this work by setting up some subcategories and moving articles into them. If you find yourself with a few spare minutes please help with this work. Thanks Cuddy Wifter (talk) 06:26, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

How do I do the same for another city?[edit]

I'm impressed by the efforts of this group. And I would like to do the same for my city too. Can I duplicate this template in so far it is appropriate? Engti (talk) 09:32, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

I think you will find that many WikiProjects are started by copying an existing project. Please copy whatever you require and good luck. Cuddy Wifter (talk) 09:51, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. Will do likewise. Engti (talk) 07:36, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Railway station images[edit]

If anybody wants to use anything from the galleries at to illustrate the railway station pages, they are more than welcome to do so. I'm happy to licence these as GFDL, and I probably won't have them up there for much longer so it would be good to see them be used for something on Wiki. Somebody in the WWW (talk) 12:25, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

That'd be fantastic if we could, but is there any chance you could upload them directly? We've gotten permission to release photos before and had a world of trouble from the free content police because the i's weren't dotted or whatever. Rebecca (talk) 13:35, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
Sorry but I don't really have the time to spend hours on Wikipedia any more. I'm not really sure what you mean about trouble from free content police? If they really have an issue when I'll put something in the footer on that site about it being licenced under GFDL or whatever, if needed? Somebody in the WWW (talk) 13:31, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
Would be good if you could - would solve that issue. Rebecca (talk) 13:40, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
Done, put it on the homepage at If anybody is going to use a few then tell me after you do as I might take that site down, hence don't know how long to leave it up for. Somebody in the WWW (talk) 08:17, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
If anybody is wishing to use this site to pull photos off, the password for the homepage is 'wikipedia'. Somebody in the WWW (talk) 08:04, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
Will be taking it down next weekend. Somebody in the WWW (talk) 08:05, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

GA Reassessessment of Crowded House[edit]

I have conducted a reassessment of the above article as part of the GA Sweeps process. I have found a number of concerns with the article and have delisted it from Good Article status as it no longer meets the criteria nd is likley to need considerable work to regain it. You can see the review at Talk:Crowded House/GA1. If you do not agree with my assessment you may challenge it at WP:GAR. Thanks. Jezhotwells (talk) 16:14, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot announcement[edit]

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:35, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Dannii Minogue GA Sweeps: On Hold[edit]

I have reviewed Dannii Minogue for GA Sweeps to determine if it still qualifies as a Good Article. In reviewing the article I have found several issues, which I have detailed here. Since the article falls under the scope of this project, I figured you would be interested in contributing to further improve the article. Please comment there to help the article maintain its GA status. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. --Happy editing! Unreferenced living people articles bot[edit]

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Melbourne/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you.

Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Melbourne/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.
If you have any questions or concerns, visit User talk:DASHBot/Wikiprojects. Okip 00:36, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Photos required from Melbourne[edit]

I am currently working on many various articles for which I require photos from around the world. I am currently requiring photos from Melbourne for these articles, and I was hoping that this message would reach a photographer who can take the photos for me. The photos I currently require are listed at User:Russavia/Required_photos#Melbourne. If any photographers can assist with this, I would be most appreciative. Please leave any comments or questions for me on my talk page at User_talk:Russavia as I am unlikely to read replies. Thanks in advance for any assistance which can be provided. Melbourne articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release[edit]

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Melbourne articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

For the Wikipedia 1.0 editorial team, SelectionBot 23:19, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject cleanup listing[edit]

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). See the tool's wiki page, this project's listing in one big table or by categories and the index of WikiProjects. Svick (talk) 21:23, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of McKillop Street, Melbourne[edit]

Ambox warning yellow.svg

The article McKillop Street, Melbourne has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Streets generally don't meet the requirements of WP:N, no mention of notability no references

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Jeepday (talk) 00:37, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

It has been 3 to 4 years since a progress update has been done on WikiProject Melbourne. I've decided to have a go at setting up a new method of calculating progress in the various areas of the project using the Quality assessment together with Category filter and estimated score.

Melbourne is home to one of the world's largest urban sprawls, and its many suburbs boast an amazing cultural diversity.
List of Melbourne suburbs  |  Category: Suburbs of Melbourne

Article List:Suburbs of Melbourne

60% Complete
Melbourne Suburbs
Quality Articles Median score % complete
GA 0
B 8 950 0.88
C 46 729 0.74
Start 232 600 0.61
Stub 97 497 0.49
List 0
Totals 383 587 0.60

The basic information for the calculation is taken from the Article List which is split into the Quality assessments, with GA or above being assumed to be 100% complete. The median score is given for each quality group and the estimated percentage complete is calculated by dividing each score by 1000 and taking the average for each group and the Total.

Note: clicking on the Article List link may not work immediately. Cuddy Wifter (talk) 06:55, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

WikiWomen's History Month[edit]

Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:Melbourne will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in Melbourne's history, society and culture. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. These events can take place off wiki, like edit-a-thons, or on wiki, such as themes and translations. Please visit the page here: WikiWomen's History Month. Requested moves of 30+ Melbourne street names[edit]

Melburnians may be interested in this multiple RM that I have initiated. My preamble:

These articles are all concerned with street names in Melbourne. (I would have include another 17, but the template has a limit of 30.) I do not support these moves; but I know that some very active editors do. It is time to air the matter, once and for all. Is it better to have an article on Collins Street in Melbourne called simply Collins Street, or to have it called Collins Street, Melbourne as at present? Which option serves the needs of Wikipedia's worldwide readership better? In almost all cases that I list there is no content in the destination article, just a redirect. And in almost all cases there is no Wikipedia article that very closely resembles the Melbourne-oriented one. There are, for example, no other Collins Streets with their own articles.

Your vote ("Support" or "Oppose") would be welcome, along with your reasons.

Pageview stats[edit]

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Melbourne to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Melbourne/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the toolserver tool. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 22:07, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

Popular pages tool update[edit]

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 05:16, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal[edit]

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live![edit]

WikiProject X icon.svg

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

WikiConfererence Australia 2015 - Save the date 3-5 October 2015[edit]

Our first Australian conference for Wikipedians/Wikimedians will be held 3-5 October 2015. Organised by Wikimedia Australia, there will be a 2-day conference (Saturday 3 October and Sunday 4 October) with an optional 3rd day (Monday 5 October) for specialist topics (unconference discussions, training sessions, etc). The venue is the State Library of Queensland in Brisbane. So put those dates in your diary! Note: Monday is a public holiday is some states but not others. Read about it here: WikiConference Australia 2015

As part of that page, there are now sections for you to:

  • indicate your interest in possibly attending the conference (this is not a binding commitment, of course)
  • add suggestions for topics to include in the conference: what you would like to hear/discuss (again, there is no commit to you presenting/organising that topic, although it’s great if you are willing to do so), or indicate your enthusiasm for any existing topic on the list by adding a note of support underneath it

It would really help our planning if you could let us know about possible attendance and the kind of topics that would make you want to come. If you don’t want to express your views on-wiki, please email me at or

We are hoping to have travel subsidies available to assist active Australasian Wikipedians to attend the conference, although we are not currently in a position to provide details, but be assured we are doing everything we can to make it possible for active Australian Wikipedians to come to the conference. Kerry (talk) 00:19, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Folks, just letting you know we will not be proceeding with Wikiconference Australia 2015 originally proposed for 3-5 October 2015. Thanks to those of you who expressed your support. You are free to watch the football finals instead :-) Kerry (talk) 08:24, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

New 5000 Challenge for Australia[edit]

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge and the wider Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge for the UK which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. If you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Australia and Oceania like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1600 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for Australia but fuelled by a contest if desirable to really get articles on every state/territory and subject mass improved. After every 100 articles done for Australia this would feed into the main Oceania one. I will start a smaller challenge for your area if there is the support. I would like some support from wikipedians here to get the Challenge off to a start anyway with some articles to make doing a Destubathon for Australia and Oceania worthwhile! Cheers.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:14, 20 November 2016 (UTC)

2016 Community Wishlist Survey Proposal to Revive Popular Pages[edit]

Magic Wand Icon 229981 Color Flipped.svg

Greetings WikiProject Melbourne Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Best regards, SteviethemanDelivered: 18:04, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Popular pages report[edit]

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Melbourne/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Melbourne.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Melbourne, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.
